From small beginnings to a successful coffee shop & catering company
Madeleines was founded in 2005 by Janet Sawkins. Initially run from Janet’s home kitchen, we have grown from small beginnings to the awesome coffee shop and catering company we are today.
She founded Madeleines as a catering company, run from home, in 2005. The business grew from strength to strength and soon left her home kitchen for the converted garage.
People in the Highway area quickly came to recognise our now-signature cakes and pastries at the Shongweni farmers market. And, after several years of success, we finally out-grew the garage as well!
You can now find us at the shop in the Oxford Village, where we serve delicious, fresh bistro-style breakfasts and lunches (see the menu). We also still do catering for outside events and, of course, still make delicious cakes and pastries for all occasions (check out the gallery).
After leaving a successful career as a nursing sister, Janet attended the Christina Martin School of Food and Wine in 2002. After completing her diploma in Culinary Arts, she returned to the school as an instructor and lecturer.

We purchase about 150 cakes per year from Madeleines for our clients birthdays. I can say without hesitation that these are the best cakes you will ever taste. If you haven’t yet tried Madeleines, then I strongly suggest you do – you won’t go anywhere after that.
